This is Morning Edition from NPR News. Good morning. I'm David Greene. After weeks of protest, security forces in Turkey carried out a violent crackdown yesterday, arresting hundreds of people in Istanbul and other cities around the country. Riot police tear gassed protesters who were trying to return to Istanbul's Taksim Square Sunday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed hundreds of thousands of cheering supporters at a pro-government rally nearby.

Pope Attracts Attention For Tolerance Toward Atheists

Pope Francis has been in office for just over two months and has been making headlines for many remarks that emphasize inclusiveness, contrasting sharply with his predecessors' style and apparently even with centuries-old Catholic dogma.

The latest was a statement last week that all human beings, even atheists, can be redeemed.

The pope was delivering a homily in the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta residence inside Vatican grounds where he has decided to live.

Chinese Police Clamp Down On Protesters After Migrant Worker's Death

Hundreds of police were deployed in southern Beijing Wednesday to quell a large protest after a migrant worker fell to her death at a clothing mall. Police say it was suicide, but there are reports the woman was gang-raped by security guards. Her family is asking for a proper investigation.

Now, among the sticky political situations surrounding the Affordable Care Act is one facing members of Congress themselves and also the people who work for them. When Congress passed the law in 2010, Republicans basically dared Democrats to include Congress and most congressional staff in the new marketplaces called exchanges. The idea was that Congress shouldn't subject the public to something that they wouldn't have for themselves.

Decision Day: High School Seniors Secure Spots In College With Deposits

Here in the United States, this is a big day for many high school seniors. It is College Decision Day, May 1st. It's when many seniors have to send in their deposits to college to secure a place in next year's freshman class. For many, this decision caps a long college application process. And to find out what it's been like, we visited a high school here in Washington D.C.
