Bring a red cooler

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about red coolers.  No joke.  Bring one with you when you go boating in the ocean.  It could save your life.  If the boat sinks, chances are the cooler will pop to the surface.  Red is easier to spot than white or blue from a rescue vessel or airplane.  That’s a safe boating tip offered by Palm City resident John Spatuzzi, a retired Coast Guard pilot, in a guest column that appears on TCPalm.com.  It was inspired by the search for two South Florida boys lost at sea.  Other tips: Wear a life jacket.  Bring a waterproof radio or a cell phone in a zip lock bag.  Paint your boat number on life jackets, cushions and anything else that could become debris.  Stay with a floating overturned boat.  Even tie yourself to it.  Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return.  I’m Paul Janensch.
