Gloria Estefan and the Pope

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about the part our own Gloria Estefan played in warming up the crowd for Pope Francis.  It was at Madison Square Garden on Friday, September 25, preceding the Pope’s Mass.  The Cuban-American singer and her husband Emilio own the Costa d’Este Beach Resort in Vero Beach and live nearby on the oceanfront.  Among the other stars performing in the big arena were Jennifer Hudson and Harry ConnickJr.  Estefan sang “MasAlla,” Spanish for “Beyond.”  “Nervous?  Of course!” she told Entertainment Tonight.  She sang the same ballad for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in 1995 for his 50th anniversary as a priest.  Estefan, 58, spends time in New York.  The musical “On Your Feet!” – based on her eventful life – opens on Broadway this fall.  She’s not in the show.  Does she care about it?  Seguro!  Definitely!  I’m Paul Janensch.
