Hero deputies

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about two Indian River County sheriff’s deputies who were awarded Medals of Heroism by Governor Rick Scott for extracting a woman from a burning car.  On March 23rd, Deputies Linda Nolan and Robert Sunkel responded to a three-vehicle crash at Oslo Road and 66th Avenue.  Despite smoke and flames, they managed to pull driver Cheryle Coons to safety.  Coons was hospitalized with severe burns.  Deputy Nolan suffered second-degree burns on her right hand. The rescue was captured by a dashboard camera in Deputy Sunkel’s patrol car.  The video was seen by millions on TV newscasts and the Indian River County sheriff’s website.  Two years ago, Nolan trained Sunkel when he was a rookie.  They make a good team.  I’m Paul Janensch
