This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about a 16-year-old hero. At about 8:30 p.m. on January 23rd, Jacob Ursin, a Vero Beach High School student, saw a car had plunged into a lake near his home in the Grace Grove subdivision. The air temp was 48. The lake depth was up to 22 feet. Jacob called 9-1-1, jumped into the water and swam 150 feet to the vehicle. The man and woman inside thrust a little girl into his arms. He made it back to shore with her. Meanwhile, Indian River County sheriff’s deputies rescued the male driver and a woman passenger. The man later died. The woman, who was the girl’s mother, survived. So did the girl, 2-year-old Alaysia Paschal. Jacob, a member of the sheriff’s Explorers group, said he just wanted to help. I’m Paul Janensch.
