Highwaymen Heritage Trail

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about the new Highwaymen Heritage Trail.  Now you can take a self-guided tour by car or bicycle around the Lincoln Park neighborhood in Fort Pierce and see tributes to the 26 African American artists called The Highwaymen, so named because they sold their vivid Florida landscapes from cars parked along US 1 and State Route A1A.  Get a map at the Fort Pierce Visitors Center in the Seven Gables House on North Indian River Drive.  The trail has seven stops.  One of my favorites is the 20-foot obelisk on Avenue D that features mosaic duplicates of Highwaymen paintings.  Another is Moore’s Creek Linear Park on Avenue B with a marker honoring Harold Newton and his protégé, Mary Ann Carroll, the only female Highwayman.  I’m Paul Janensch.
