Katharine the Great

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about Katharine the great white shark.  After spending time off the Treasure Coast, she is headed north.  Recently she pinged off North Carolina, according to Ocearch, a great white shark research team.  A ping is a signal sent to a satellite from a tracking device on her dorsal fin when it breaks the surface.  Earlier, she pinged off Titusville, Fort Pierce and Vero Beach.  In 2014, Katharine came close to Sebastian Inlet and St. Lucie Inlet.  Katharine was captured and tagged off Cape Cod in 2013.  She weighed 2,300 pounds and was 14 feet long.  Scientists hope Katharine will lead them to great white breeding areas.  The shark was named Katharine in honor of Katharine Lee Bates, of Cape Cod, who wrote the words to “America the Beautiful.”  I’m Paul Janensch
