Keep it dark

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about a threat to loggerhead sea turtles.  Hey, neighbors, keep it dark on our beach!  According to the weekly newspaper 32963, it’s a good season for loggerheads in Indian River County.  Except for Vero Beach below South Beach Park.  Nighttime lighting is the problem.  The condo in which I own a unit is a block inland.  But the condos that face the ocean cast a light that can be seen from the beach.  Sea Turtle Coordinator Kendra Cope told the Vero Beach City Council that loggerhead hatchlings mistake it for moon glow.  They scamper toward it away from the salt water, and perish. Some in swimming pools.  So neighbors, be good to our turtles.  Turn off those exterior lights or at least aim them to the west.  And close your curtains.  I’m Paul Janensch.
