Share the road

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about sharing the road.  At different times, I am a motorist, a cyclist and a pedestrian.  So I can identify with those in each category.  A federal report says Florida has the highest bicycle death rate in the country.  Indian River County is better than the rest of the state but still has deaths and injuries.  Here is my advice.  To motorists: You are surrounded by metal.  Cyclists and pedestrians are not.  Give them a break.  To cyclists: The rules of the road apply to you, too.  Don’t run red lights.  Signal before you turn.  To pedestrians: Stay on the sidewalk where available.  Cross at the light in busy parts of Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, Stuart and elsewhere.  To cyclists and pedestrians:  Carry a light when it’s dark.  To all three: Be careful.   I’m Paul Janensch.
