They lived among us

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about two men in the news from our area.  First, the Orlando shooter.  Omar Mateen spent his early years in Port St. Lucie.  He attended various schools.  He earned a degree from Indian River State College.  He worked as a private security guard.  He resided with his second wife in Fort Pierce.  He attended the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce on Military Road.  Second, the suicide bomber.  Mohammad Abu-Salha of Indian River County joined anti-government rebels in Syria.   In 2014, he detonated 16 tons of explosives, killing himself and an unknown number of government soldiers.  Mateen and Abu-Salha lived among us.  But to quote a line over an editorial on TCPalm.com, “This is not who we are.”  I’m Paul Janensch
