Treasure found off Treasure Coast

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about the recovery of treasure off the Treasure Coast.  On July 30 and 31, a salvage crew found more than 350 gold coins worth $4.5 million off Wabasso in Indian River County.   The coins were from 11 ships carrying gold, silver and jewels to Spain.  The fleet was destroyed in a hurricane exactly 300 years before.  The crew works for the company that has salvage rights to the fleet.  On June 17, the Eric Schmitt family of Sanford, under contract with the salvage company, found $1 million in coins and artifacts off Fort Pierce.  It was Hillary Schmitt’s 22nd birthday.  In 2014 and 2013, the Schmitts and the salvage company found other coins and artifacts from the fleet.  For these treasure hunters, the Treasure Coast is certainly living up to its name.  I’m Paul Janensch.
