Zany the Zonkey

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about Zany the Zonkey -- a new resident of Coast Stable, a 15-acre ranch in Palm City.  She is the hybrid offspring of a male miniature donkey and a female zebra named Zola.  Zany was born May 31st, and Zola seems happy nursing her.  Zany certainly looks like a cross between a donkey and a zebra.  She has the head, neck and body of a donkey and the striped legs of a zebra.  Donkeys and zebras both belong to the equine, or horse, family.  Wild zonkeys are very rare.  Most zonkeys are in a zoo or a place like Coast Stable.  Like many other animal hybrids, including the mule, Zany is sterile and will never produce an offspring.  Photos of Zany, are at TCPalm.com.  You’ll go, “Awwww.”  I’m Paul Janensch.
