Fort Pierce, FL – I'm surprised the Treasure Coast has not made more of a fuss over the men's and women's swimming and diving teams at Indian River State College. They captured the national titles again - this time in Buffalo, New York, at the championships held by the National Junior College Athletic Association. The pool was indoors unlike the impressive outdoor facility on the IRSC main campus in Fort Pierce. No big community rally? No parade? Are we bored with it all? It was the 37th consecutive national championship for the men and the 30th for the women. The men hold the longest winning streak in any U.S. collegiate sport. Indian River State College now has four-year programs, but only freshmen and sophomores compete in junior college athletics. Nick Shuttinger and Vanessa Hanbury were named junior college swimmers of the year. Ryan Mallam, in his first year as coach, said Indian River has defined "a culture of greatness" in swim programs. Athletic Director Scott Kimmelman - who was with the swim program for 12 years - was inducted into the junior college athletics Hall of Fame. Well, I'm not bored. To the swim program, I say, "Congratulations!" I hope you do it again next year. For 88.9 FM, this is Paul Janensch.
