Measles is coming back

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about measles.  The disease is serious.  It was eliminated in Florida and elsewhere in the U.S. through mass vaccinations.  But it’s making a comeback.  Florida’s first resident victim of measles this year is an unvaccinated student at Fairlawn Elementary Magnet School in St. Lucie County.  Then we learned about more cases on the Treasure Coast.  Florida and most other states exempt school children from vaccinations only for religious reasons or for medical reasons backed by a health professional.  Some parents believe vaccination causes autism.  Not so, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.  It urges vaccinations for everyone not exempted by law.  If we all cooperate with health professionals, measles is preventable.  I’m Paul Janensch.
